Choyo – Longivity celebration
According to a lunar calendar, September 9th is a day of Choyo,-no-sekku,or longevity celebration.
From ancient time in China, odds numbers are considered to be auspicious and the double nine of Choyo is considered to be the most auspicious one.
During Edo period, Five seasonal celebrations were adopted; Jinjitu, january7, jyoshi, March 3,
Tango, May 5, Shichiseki,July 7 and Choyo, September 9.
In ancient China, a chrysanthemum has a pronounced scent and was considered to be a flower of grace. It was also believed to have the power to purge evil spirits. Thus on that day there was a custom to drink ‘’kiku sake’’ and clime up to a high mountain.
This Chinese custom was introduced during Heian period and people drank ‘’kiku sake’’ and wipe their body with a cotton fragrance of chrysanthemum to pray for their longevity.
Today, this seasonal celebration isn’t so well known as others.
