端午の節句

5月５日は端午の節句。この日に薬草である菖蒲やよもぎを軒につるしたり、菖蒲湯に入るなどして邪気を祓いました。鎌倉時代の武士の時代に入ると菖蒲は『尚武』-武事を重んじる- に通じることから、よろいやかぶとなどの武具を飾る行事になったそう。


端午の節句
5 月5日は現在では『こどもの日』とされていますが元々は『端午の節句』。男の子がたくましく健やかに育つことを願う行事です。端午というのは月の初めの『午の日』という意味。古来中国では病気や災厄を祓う節供の日でした。野に出かけて薬草を摘んだり、菖蒲酒を飲んで邪気を祓う行事が行われてきました。日本では古くから5月は田植えが始まる前に早乙女と呼ばれる若い娘たちが禊を行う時期でありこれらが合わさって端午の節句となりました。

Tango-no-Sekku
May 5th is designated as Children’s Day but it was originally a Boy’s Festival (tango-no-Selkku), it is aslo called the Iris Festival, and we wish that boys will strong and healthy men. In ancient China, it was a day of seasonal division and to prevent from all misfortunes. There used to be an event where people went to the field to pick some herbs and had Shobu-zake (sake made of Iris). In Japan, May is the time when rice planting girls get into the river or sea to purify and
perform their ablutions. All of those rituals where combined and are now called
‘’Tango-no-sekku’’.
